A wet room is the most requested bathroom upgrade and the least understood. The finished photographs show an open tiled space and a sheet of glass; the actual product is a waterproof structure with a slope built into the floor, and every wet room that fails, fails underneath.
Optimum HVAC carries out bathroom installations in St Leonards-on-Sea including full wet room conversions, and this is what the honest version of the job contains.
The floor is the project
Level access means the shower floor falls to a drain while meeting the rest of the room flush. On timber floors that means a former set between strengthened joists; the deflection question matters, because a floor that flexes will crack tiles and grout no matter how good the tiling is. On solid floors the fall is cut or screeded in.
This is the stage where Optimum HVAC spends the unglamorous days: joists checked and stiffened, the former set to the drain position, and levels rehearsed so the finished floor meets the door threshold correctly. Everything visible later sits on this fortnight nobody photographs.
- Timber floors need strength and stiffness, not just a former.
- Drain position decided by joists and waste route, then design.
- Threshold level agreed before anything is built.
Tanking: the real product
Tiles are decoration; the waterproof membrane behind them is the wet room. The tanking layer covers the floor and wet walls as a continuous system, corners and penetrations detailed with the manufacturer's tapes and collars, carried into the drain so water that gets through grout, and some always does, still ends up in the waste.
Ask to see the tanking complete before tiling begins, and photograph it. That five-minute record is the cheapest insurance in the whole project, and any installer proud of the layer will happily wait while you take it.
- Continuous membrane, floor and wet walls as one system.
- Corners, pipes and the drain are the detail points.
- See it and photograph it before tiles cover it.
Water in, water away
The drain has to swallow the shower's full flow with margin, which is a matching exercise between drain capacity and shower valve, not two separate purchases. Falls need to be consistent and sufficient across the showering zone; too shallow and water wanders, too steep and the floor feels wrong underfoot.
Ventilation belongs in the same breath: a fully tiled room holds moisture in the air, and a properly ducted extractor with run-on is what keeps grout, sealant and paintwork healthy. A wet room with weak extraction ages a decade in two winters.
Warmth and the finishing decisions
Tiled floors are honest: cold unless heated. Electric underfloor matting under a wet room floor transforms it from tolerable to luxurious, and it must go in during the build; it cannot be retrofitted under tiles later. The same one-chance logic applies to niches, seats and grab-rail noggins, cheap at first fix, impossible after.
Glass, screens and fittings then follow the layout rather than leading it: a single fixed panel positioned where the fall and the spray pattern actually are keeps the dry zone genuinely dry, which is the entire point of the exercise.

Questions customers ask
Can any bathroom become a wet room?
Structurally almost any can; the honest variables are joist condition and depth on timber floors, the achievable drain route, and threshold levels. A survey answers all three before any money moves.
Are wet rooms prone to leaking?
Badly built ones, yes; properly tanked ones, no. The membrane system, not the tiling, is the waterproofing, which is why seeing and photographing the tanking before tiles is worth insisting on.
Is underfloor heating necessary in a wet room?
Not necessary, but it is the difference between a functional tiled floor and a comfortable one, and the build is the only chance to install it. Most people who skip it wish they had not.
Buy the floor, the tanking and the drainage; the tiles will look after themselves. Every happy wet room owner spent their attention below the surface.
