A household spends four figures on a new boiler and the house heats up exactly as slowly as before, the same room stays cold, and the hot water still runs out when two people shower. The installation was fine. The boiler was simply never the part that was limiting the system.

The boiler makes heat; the system delivers it
A heating system has four jobs: generate heat, move it, emit it, and control it. A new boiler improves the first and, with a modern pump and controls, part of the fourth. If the complaint is a cold room, slow warm-up or uneven heat, the problem usually sits in moving and emitting, and those are untouched by swapping the appliance.
The test is simple. If every radiator gets hot and the house still feels cold, the emitters are undersized for the heat loss. If some radiators never get hot while others are scalding, it is distribution: balancing, circulation, or a restriction. If everything is lukewarm, it is flow, whether the pump, air, or sludge blocking the pipework.

Pipework, microbore and what the house can actually carry
Older properties often run on pipework that was sized for the way the system was originally designed to work. Microbore in particular has a limited carrying capacity, and it silts up more readily than larger pipe because there is simply less room for the debris to go past. A powerful new boiler cannot force heat through pipe that will not carry it.
That does not automatically mean replumbing the house. It may mean upgrading specific runs, replacing the worst-affected radiators, or accepting a slightly higher flow temperature than a modern system would ideally use. What it does mean is that the survey has to look at the pipework rather than only at the boiler cupboard.

Radiator sizing and the low-temperature question
Radiators were often sized decades ago for a system running much hotter than a condensing boiler wants to. A condensing boiler is only genuinely efficient when its return temperature is low enough for the flue gases to condense, and that means running cooler water, which means each radiator has to be larger to give out the same heat.
This is where real savings live. Upgrading the emitters in the rooms that underperform, then dropping the flow temperature, keeps the house comfortable while letting the boiler condense properly for most of the season. It is a less exciting purchase than a new appliance and it usually does more for both comfort and running cost.

Cleanliness, cylinders and hot water that runs out
Every system accumulates magnetite, the black iron oxide sludge that collects in the bottom of radiators and inside heat exchangers. It is the single most common reason a system underperforms and the most common cause of premature failure in a new boiler fitted to an old system, which is why cleansing, inhibitor and a filter are not optional extras on a replacement.
Hot water is a separate calculation entirely. A combi delivers hot water at the rate the incoming main can supply, so poor mains flow means a poor shower regardless of the boiler's rating, and two simultaneous showers will always be a compromise. Will a new boiler fix my cold radiator?
Usually not. A single cold radiator is a distribution problem: balancing, a stuck valve, air, or sludge in that circuit. Replacing the appliance leaves all four of those exactly as they were.
Is it worth changing radiators when replacing a boiler?
Often, in the rooms that underperform. Larger emitters let the system run cooler water, which is what allows a condensing boiler to actually condense and is where the running-cost saving comes from.
Why does my hot water run out with a combi?
A combi heats water on demand at the rate your incoming main supplies it. If the mains flow is modest, or two outlets are used at once, performance drops. That is a case for stored hot water rather than a bigger combi.
